Established in 2008 under Haryana Act No. 26, UHSR is the apex health sciences university of Haryana — incorporating PGIMS Rohtak, North India's largest public teaching hospital since 1960. History & Establishment

Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health Sciences was established on June 2, 2008 under the Haryana Legislature Act No. 26 of 2008. The university was created by separating the health sciences faculties from Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, and incorporating PGIMS — the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences — which had been functioning as a premier teaching hospital since 1960.

Named in honour of Padma Bhushan Dr. Pitambar Das Sharma, a distinguished physician and educationist from Haryana, the university stands as a landmark achievement in the state's mission to advance health sciences education and research.

Location & Campus

Spread over 369 acres in Rohtak city, the UHSR-PGIMS campus is located approximately 70 km west of New Delhi on NH-10 (Delhi–Hisar highway). The campus includes the main hospital complex, academic blocks, residential quarters, hostels, library, sports facilities and a multi-disciplinary research unit.

The combined Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at PGIMS is one of the most advanced neurological care centres in Haryana and surrounding states. About the Department

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at PGIMS manages anaesthesia services for over 25,000 surgeries annually across 20+ operating theatre complexes. The department also oversees five Intensive Care Units (General ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiac ICU, Neuro-ICU, and Burns ICU) with over 100 beds combined.

A dedicated Pain Clinic provides management for chronic pain conditions including cancer pain, neuropathic pain, post-surgical pain, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). MD Anaesthesiology is offered under NEET PG with 6 seats per year.

About the Department

The Department of Community Medicine at PGIMS is responsible for training MBBS students in preventive and social medicine, public health, epidemiology, health statistics, and community-based healthcare delivery. The department operates an Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) in Rohtak city and a Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) in a nearby village for field training.

The department conducts epidemiological surveys, population health assessments, and community interventions in collaboration with state health programmes. Faculty are active in research on communicable diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, and non-communicable disease burden in Haryana. MD Community Medicine is offered under NEET PG.

MBBS Training — Phase I & Community Medicine

MBBS students undertake a mandatory 2-week Rural Health Training posting at RHTC and urban community health postings at UHTC as part of the CBME curriculum. The department also organises health awareness camps, village surveys, and participatory rural appraisals for students.

Attendance: Minimum 75% attendance mandatory for appearing in annual examinations (CBME guidelines)
Internal Assessment: 40% marks in internal assessment required separately for MBBS (CBME 2019)
Passing: 50% aggregate (theory + practical combined) and 50% in practical separately

CBME (Competency-Based Medical Education) was introduced by NMC (National Medical Commission) in 2019 for the MBBS programme. It emphasizes clinical competencies, attitudes, ethics & communication (AETCOM), and integrated teaching. UHSR follows CBME for all MBBS batches from 2019 onwards.

Re-checking is a process where the answer sheets are re-examined for totalling errors and marking omissions. Re-evaluation (re-marking) is also available for some programmes. Both must be applied within 15 days of result declaration.
